Tinidazole(Cas 19387-91-8) Usage
Description |
Tinidazole is classified as an antiprotozoal and antibiotic from the nitroimidazole class. It is used to treat infections caused by protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. |
Contraindications |
Tinidazole should not be taken together with alcohol. |
Uses |
Tinidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent, chemically related to metronidazole. It is effective in treating infections caused by protozoa (such as trichomoniasis, giardiasis, and amebiasis) and certain bacterial infections, including bacterial vaginosis. It works by interfering with the DNA of the organisms, leading to their death. Tinidazole works by generating cytotoxic intermediates within the microorganism that bind to its DNA, causing DNA strand breakage and inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis, ultimately leading to cell death. |
Pharmacokinetics | Absorption: Tinidazole is 100% bioavailable when taken orally, with rapid absorption and a long half-life of approximately 12.3 hours. Distribution: Tinidazole is minimally bound to plasma proteins (12%) and has a large volume of distribution (50.7 L), indicating good tissue penetration. Metabolism: Primarily metabolized by the liver. Excretion: Tinidazole is eliminated mainly through hepatic metabolism, with 63% of the drug being excreted via urine. |

Single-dose tinidazole for the treatment of giardiasis
P Speelman
Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Vol. 27, No. 2
In the first trial 33 randomly selected patients were treated with tinidazole (50 mg/kg of body weight to a maximum of 2 g) or metronidazole (60 mg/kg of body weight to a maximum of 2.4 g) in a single oral dose. Patients were followed for 4 weeks after the end of therapy for the presence of G.
Tinidazole for the treatment of vaginal infections
Michael D Nailor &Jack D Sobel
Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs Volume 16, 2007 - Issue 5
Ongoing, as yet incomplete, studies directly comparing the clinical efficacy of metronidazole and tinidazole for bacterial vaginosis should clarify the status of tinidazole; however, cure rates are unlikely to be significantly different. Although uncommon, high-level trichomonal metronidazole resistance can be reliably cured by using tinidazole, which is an invaluable advantage.
