Irinotecan Hcl is a type of chemotherapy drug called a topoisomerase I inhibitor. It causes breaks that cannot be repaired in the DNA of cells. This stops the growth of cancer cells and other rapidly dividing cells and causes them to die. Irinotecan HCl is a chemotherapy drug used primarily in the treatment of colorectal cancer, particularly in cases where the cancer has metastasized or recurred. It is also used in combination with other chemotherapy agents to treat various solid tumors, including lung, gastric, and pancreatic cancers.
