Fosfomycin tromethamine is an oral antimicrobial agent. The conversion of fosfomycin to its tromethamine salt has significantly increased its water solubility, allowing for effective oral administration. Fosfomycin tromethamine is a phosphonic acid bactericidal agent with in vitro activity against most urinary tract pathogens. It is particularly active against Escherichia coli, and Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Serratia and Enterococcus spp. |

A single dose of fosfomycin tromethamine is well absorbed and produces therapeutic concentrations in the urine for 2–4 days. Comparative clinical trials suggest that a single dose of fosfomycin tromethamine 3.0 g is as clinically effective as 7- to 10-day treatment regimens of standard agents used to treat UTIs, such as nitrofurantoin, norfloxacin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole.
